Zlatko Dalic is confident that captain Luka Modric will recover from surgery in time to lead Croatia at this summer’s World Cup. The 40-year-old suffered a complex fracture to his left zygomatic bone during a recent league match.
The injury occurred following a clash of heads with Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli last Sunday. The two sides played out a goalless draw.
AC Milan confirmed that surgeons completed the procedure successfully. The club did not specify an exact return date but sent wishes for a speedy recovery ahead of the global tournament.
The World Cup kicks off on 11 June. Croatia open their campaign against England on 17 June. Dalic revealed he has been in constant contact with the veteran playmaker.
“I have spoken with Luka and wished him success with the operation and a quality, fast recovery,” Dalic stated. “I am convinced he will do everything possible to be ready for the tournament. We will give him full support.”
The Croatia boss added: “I trust the recovery will follow the plan. Luka will captain us at another major competition this summer.”
The setback means Modric will not feature again for AC Milan this season. The club has four matches remaining as they fight to finish inside the top four. They currently occupy third spot with 67 points. Juventus are fourth on 64 points, while Como and AS Roma sit level on 61 points.
