Key Takeaways

  • Referees questioned by Milan prosecutors confirmed they knew about Gianluca Rocchi’s disputed match appointments
  • The suspended referee chief allegedly selected officials who favoured FC Internazionale Milano during last season’s title run-in
  • Five refereeing figures face investigation, but no players, coaches or club directors are involved

Referees who spoke to prosecutors in Milan have admitted they knew about controversial match appointments made by Gianluca Rocchi. The suspended referee designator is facing claims of sporting fraud.

Investigators are looking into suggestions that Rocchi influenced Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions. They also believe he picked referees who would help FC Internazionale Milano while avoiding those who might harm the club’s chances.

The case centres on a meeting at San Siro on 2 April 2025. This took place on the same day as the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg between AC Milan and Inter.

Prosecutors claim Rocchi chose Andrea Colombo to referee Inter’s league match against Bologna on 20 April 2025. They believe Colombo was seen as a “favourable” official for the Nerazzurri.

The investigation also focuses on the appointment of Daniele Doveri for the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg. This choice would have stopped Doveri from officiating the final. Sources suggest Doveri was viewed as “unfavourable” towards Inter. The club did not reach the final anyway.

Representatives from FC Internazionale Milano have strongly denied any wrongdoing. Italian media reports state that Rocchi only spoke with other refereeing officials. He did not meet with anyone from the club.

Currently, five people are under investigation. All of them work within the refereeing association. No footballers, managers or club directors face charges.
