Chelsea Football Club have confirmed that young forward Jesse Derry is now in hospital after a serious head injury stopped his first senior game early. The 18-year-old winger started his first Premier League match on Monday evening but had to leave the field before half-time following a bad collision.

The incident happened just before the break during Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge. Derry jumped to challenge for the ball inside the opposition’s box and hit his head against Forest player Zach Abbott. The impact was serious enough that club doctors had to treat him immediately on the grass.

Match officials stopped the game for several minutes while doctors helped Derry. The England youth international received oxygen while lying on the pitch. The medical team then carried him off the field on a stretcher to keep him safe.

Club officials later shared good news about Derry’s condition. They said the young player is now awake, able to talk, and doctors are checking him carefully in hospital. “All the early signs look good,” said temporary manager Callum McFarlane in his post-match interview with BBC Match of the Day. “We hope he makes a full recovery.”

McFarlane said he felt sad for the teenager, who had waited a long time for this chance. “It is heartbreaking for Jesse,” the coach added. “He looked dangerous with the ball and was making chances. This should have been a special night for him.”

Derry joined Chelsea from Crystal Palace last summer and has played well in the youth teams, scoring 12 times in 29 academy games this season. He is the son of former professional footballer Shaun Derry, who previously played for Leeds United and Crystal Palace.

The head collision led to a penalty for Chelsea, but Cole Palmer missed the spot-kick as Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels made a good save. Striker Liam Delap came on as a concussion substitute to replace the injured Derry for the rest of the match.
