German football legend Bastian Schweinsteiger has shared his ideal starting eleven for the national team at the upcoming World Cup. The former midfielder explained his tactical choices to Sport Bild, detailing how he would arrange the side if he were in charge.
The 41-year-old has made a bold selection in the centre of the pitch. He has picked Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich to partner Aleksandar Pavlović, leaving Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund out of the starting line-up. Schweinsteiger told the magazine that Nmecha is still working his way back to full fitness after an injury.
Schweinsteiger believes Goretzka offers the physical strength needed for matches in the United States. He pointed out that the tournament schedule and kick-off times in America demand high levels of running and stamina. The former captain also noted that both Goretzka and Pavlović are enjoying excellent seasons at Bayern Munich. He thinks the national team should benefit from the strong form of Bayern players by including more of them in the squad.
On the wing, Schweinsteiger has turned to VfB Stuttgart’s Chris Führich. He sees the winger as the best option to cover for Serge Gnabry, who is currently injured. Schweinsteiger praised Führich for his development at Stuttgart, saying he brings qualities that are hard for defenders to handle.
The World Cup winner also mentioned other options for the wide positions. He suggested Jamie Leweling could play on the right side, offering a more defensive option if needed. He also spoke highly of Lennart Karl, who impressed during friendly matches against Switzerland and Ghana in March.
Schweinsteiger’s full starting eleven includes Oliver Baumann in goal. The defence consists of Joshua Kimmich, Jonathan Tah, Nico Schlotterbeck, and David Raum. In midfield, Goretzka and Pavlović would sit behind an attacking trio of Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Führich. Kai Havertz would lead the line as the main striker.
