Real Madrid must beat Barcelona on Sunday to keep their La Liga title hopes alive. The match takes place at the Spotify Camp Nou. However, the team faces a difficult task with several key players missing.
Kylian Mbappe will not play in the El Clasico. The French striker did not travel with the squad to Catalonia. Staff made this decision on Sunday morning after he felt pain during Saturday’s training session.
Mbappe was likely to start on the bench. He could have come on as a substitute later in the game. However, doctors decided it was too risky to play him.
Real Madrid already miss several important men. Federico Valverde is out with a concussion after a clash with Aurelien Tchouameni in training. Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao and Arda Guler are also injured.
There is good news for the defence. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is back from injury. He will start in goal at the Camp Nou.
If Barcelona do not lose on Sunday, they will win the league title. Real Madrid need a victory to stay in the race. Mbappe might play against Real Oviedo on Thursday, but the title could already be over by then.
The club is also planning for next season. They have contacted the agent of a Manchester City defender about a possible summer transfer.
