Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé has won the Ligue 1 Player of the Season award. The France international received the trophy at the UNFP Awards ceremony in Paris on Monday evening.
Dembélé has played only 20 matches in the French top flight this term. He started just nine of those games on the pitch. Despite this, he scored 10 goals and provided five assists for his side.
The 27-year-old also holds the Ballon d’Or. He won football’s most prestigious individual prize last September. Dembélé believes this changed how people see his performances.
“My situation is different because I won the Ballon d’Or,” he said. “I have had some small injuries this season. But whenever I play, I try to give my best. I am happy that other players voted for me.”
He defeated his PSG colleague Vitinha to claim the honour. Many people expected the Portuguese midfielder to win the vote. However, Ligue 1’s leading scorer Esteban Lepaul of Stade Rennais did not receive a nomination for the award.
Paris Saint-Germain now prepare to face RC Lens on Wednesday. They need only a draw to secure the league championship. After that, they will compete against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final later this month.
