VfL Bochum have announced that midfielder Mats Pannewig will miss their final match of the season against SC Karlsruhe on Sunday. The 21-year-old suffered the injury during last Saturday’s meeting with Hannover 96.

The problem struck after just twelve minutes of play. Pannewig fell to the pitch following a tackle and needed several minutes of treatment. He could not carry on and had to leave the field.

Medical checks on Monday, 11 May, showed he has damaged his shin. He will be unavailable for a lengthy spell.

The club doctors will treat the wound without surgery. Pannewig must rest for several weeks. He will then slowly build up his activity levels.

This means he will also sit out the opening weeks of pre-season. Training for the new term starts in late June, but the midfielder will not take part.

Simon Zoller, director of football at the club, shared his thoughts on the setback. He offered sympathy to the player and the squad. He praised the midfielder’s progress over recent months. He also expressed belief that Pannewig would work hard in recovery and return in stronger form. The club will give him full support during this time, Zoller confirmed.
