Didier Deschamps has revealed his 26-player France squad for the upcoming World Cup, conceding the emotional difficulty for stars excluded from his final tournament selection. The 57-year-old announced the roster as a guest on TF1’s evening news programme on Thursday, marking his last squad reveal as national team manager before his contract expires.

The veteran coach addressed the sentimental weight of his farewell campaign. He explained that while he rarely displays feelings in public settings, he recognises these moments represent some of his final duties in the role. Deschamps confirmed he now channels all energy toward the tournament rather than focusing on his impending departure.

The goalkeeping department featured unexpected selections, with Robin Risser chosen as the third option. Deschamps indicated that Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas Chevalier might have received the nod instead had fitness concerns and limited playing time not hindered his chances. The coach also ruled out a potential return for former captain Hugo Lloris, despite recent speculation.

Crystal Palace pair Jean-Philippe Mateta and Maxence Lacroix received surprise invitations to join the defence. However, Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga failed to secure a place. Deschamps accepted these decisions cause genuine distress for established players accustomed to selection, though he clarified the choices were finalised well before Thursday’s announcement.

France begin their Group I fixtures against Senegal on June 16, with further matches against Iraq and Norway to follow. The squad will first contest warm-up clashes against Ivory Coast and Northern Ireland before travelling to the American East Coast for the tournament proper.
