- Cardinale rejects claims he cares only about profits rather than winning trophies
AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale has promised to examine the club’s entire structure this summer. He admits that missing Champions League qualification would be a complete failure.
The American businessman spoke to Italian newspapers Corriere della Sera and Gazzetta dello Sport. He rarely gives interviews. However, he felt he must speak because the team is in crisis.
Milan have won just one of their last five league matches. They have lost three times during this poor run. The team now risks missing the top four in Serie A.
The Rossoneri are level on 67 points with AS Roma. Only two games remain this season. Fans are angry with both the players and the club management.
Cardinale revealed he has already met with coach Massimiliano Allegri. They discussed many issues. However, he will not make final decisions until the season finishes.
“We must win our final two matches,” Cardinale said. “If we do not qualify for the Champions League, that is a failure.”
Some reporters claim Cardinale only cares about making money. He strongly denied this.
“That idea is absurd,” he stated. “I have always won during my career. I want AC Milan to be number one. Money helps, but winning matters most.”
Cardinale admitted he has made mistakes since buying the club. He said this is the hardest project he has ever done. However, he promised to keep fighting until Milan wins again.
The owner plans to review everything this summer. This includes the coaching staff, player recruitment, and the academy. He wants to build a world-class organisation.
He also defended the new stadium project with Inter Milan. He said this will help the club sign better players. It will also give fans a modern home.
Cardinale noted cultural differences between American and Italian football. He said he needs help from Italian experts to succeed.
