- Favourable results elsewhere, with Mainz beating Heidenheim, confirmed Wolfsburg’s survival
VfL Wolfsburg secured their Bundesliga future with a narrow victory over FC St. Pauli on a grey Saturday afternoon in Hamburg. The clash at Millerntor-Stadion carried huge stakes, as both sides fought to avoid automatic demotion to Germany’s second tier.
The match took place in cloudy conditions with temperatures at twelve degrees. Both clubs entered the fixture level on twenty-six points alongside 1. FC Heidenheim, creating a three-way battle for the solitary relegation playoff position.
The decisive moment arrived in the first half. Christian Eriksen delivered a dangerous corner towards the near post, where Greek centre-back Konstantinos Koulierakis rose above the defence. His thundering header flew through a crowded goalmouth and nestled in the bottom-left corner, giving Wolfsburg a vital lead.
The visitors received additional encouragement from events at Voith-Arena. News filtered through that Mainz had taken the lead against Heidenheim, later doubling their advantage through Nadiem Amiri. These results meant Wolfsburg’s single goal would prove sufficient for survival.
St. Pauli fought hard for an equaliser after the break. Manager Alexander Blessin introduced Gambian forward Abdoulie Ceesay at half-time to boost the attack. However, the hosts struggled to break down a resolute Wolfsburg defence, despite several attempts from Australian midfielder Jackson Irvine and others.
Wolfsburg created further chances on the counter-attack. Danish forward Adam Daghim twice went close but found Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj in excellent form. The St. Pauli keeper made several smart stops with his legs to keep his side within reach.
The final whistle confirmed St. Pauli’s immediate return to 2. Bundesliga after just one season in the top flight. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg will face the third-placed team from the second tier in a two-legged playoff, offering them a final opportunity to preserve their Bundesliga status for another campaign.
