German media report that SC Freiburg are working hard to sign Italian forward Wilfried Gnonto. The Bundesliga club want to take the 22-year-old from Leeds United before next season starts.

The winger moved to England in 2022. He signed a five-year deal with Leeds after leaving FC Zurich in Switzerland.

Since his arrival, Gnonto has played 45 matches in the Premier League. He scored two goals and made seven assists at that level. In the Championship, he has 17 goals and eight assists from 79 games.

His strong start at Leeds led to international recognition. Former Italy manager Roberto Mancini called him up in 2022. Gnonto won 13 caps for the Azzurri between 2022 and 2023. He made history by becoming Italy’s youngest goal scorer. He found the net against Germany in the Nations League at just 18 years and 222 days old. Italy lost that match 5-2.

However, the forward has not represented his country for three years now.

Sky Sport DE and journalist Florian Plettenberg now claim that Freiburg hope to bring him to Germany this summer. The report from Saturday suggests Leeds will listen to offers. They may accept a permanent transfer or a loan with a compulsory purchase clause. The deal faces some challenges, but Freiburg remain determined to complete the signing.
