Inter Milan celebrated their domestic triumph this weekend, yet the festivities may signal the end of an era for several squad members. The Nerazzurri clinched both the Serie A title and Coppa Italia, but Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Hellas Verona could mark the final appearance for numerous key figures at the iconic San Siro stadium.
Coach Cristian Chivu witnessed his side play out a stalemate against the relegated Verona outfit. The match served merely as a prelude to the trophy presentation and subsequent open-top bus parade through Milan’s streets.
The club now faces a transitional summer. Four experienced defenders and the first-choice goalkeeper see their contracts expire next month. Yann Sommer, aged 37, completes his three-year stint having made 139 total appearances, including a century in the league. Meanwhile, defensive trio Matteo Darmian (36), Francesco Acerbi (38) and Stefan De Vrij (34) all expect to depart when their deals conclude on 30 June.
Midfield veteran Henrikh Mkhitaryan remains undecided about his future. The Armenian international, who turned 37 in January, told DAZN that discussions with the club will happen shortly. He must choose between hanging up his boots or extending his career for another campaign.
Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries presents another uncertainty. His contract contains a release clause that rival clubs could activate during the summer window. However, no firm offers have materialised yet.
Elsewhere, transfer speculation surrounds Davide Frattesi. The Italian midfielder has struggled for regular action, managing merely 552 minutes across 22 league matches with just three starts. A summer departure appears probable for the frustrated squad member.
Conversely, the club retains its core young talent. Nicolo Barella, Petar Sucic and Piotr Zielinski all look certain to remain. Hakan Calhanoglu has also dismissed previous links to Galatasaray, confirming his commitment to the Milan giants.
Regarding Alessandro Bastoni, earlier reports suggested a move to Barcelona next year, though these rumours have since faded. The Italian centre-back now seems likely to honour his contract.
