Olympique Lyonnais finished their Ligue 1 campaign with a crushing defeat at the Groupama Stadium on Sunday evening. Paulo Fonseca’s side welcomed RC Lens for the final league clash of the 2025-26 term, but the hosts suffered a miserable night on the pitch.
Before the match began, supporters gathered to honour Fleury Di Nallo. The legendary striker, who recently passed away, stands as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. Thousands of fans packed the stands to pay their respects to the former number 10 and his remarkable legacy.
Les Gones entered the match with hopes of securing direct qualification for the Champions League group stage. They needed to defeat Lens and hope that Lille OSC dropped points against AJ Auxerre. Lille did indeed lose their fixture, but Lyon failed to hold up their end of the bargain.
The visitors struck after just 20 minutes through Wesley Said. The forward doubled his tally later in the match, while Florian Sotoca added a third goal before the half-time whistle. The home defence struggled to cope with the pressure throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Paulo Fonseca made changes at the interval, including the substitution of an English defender who had found the pace of the Lens wingers too difficult to handle. The second half brought no improvement for the home side, with Florian Thauvin netting a fourth goal to complete the rout.
Despite the heavy loss, Lyon will compete in next season’s Champions League preliminary rounds. This achievement marks a remarkable turnaround for a club that faced serious difficulties just twelve months ago.
Several players may have made their final appearances for their respective clubs. Endrick, the Brazilian forward, worked tirelessly for Lyon but lacked support from his teammates. He never shied away from responsibility despite the heavy scoreline. Meanwhile, Lens defender Malang Sarr produced a solid display, winning most of his individual battles against the Brazilian striker. Both players now face uncertain futures as the transfer window approaches.
Corentin Tolisso, the Lyon captain, endured a difficult evening in the centre of midfield. He struggled to influence the game and appeared far from his best form. In contrast, Wesley Said delivered a man-of-the-match performance, terrorising the Lyon back line with his pace and movement throughout the contest.
