OGC Nice have slipped into the relegation play-off places after failing to secure victory against FC Metz on the final day of the Ligue 1 campaign. The goalless result at the Allianz Riviera confirms they will face AS Saint-Étienne in a two-legged tie to determine their top-flight future.
The match took place in a strange atmosphere. Fans unveiled a large banner to honour club captain Dante, who is hanging up his boots. However, the celebration was mixed with deep anxiety. Supporters sang loudly demanding better efforts from the players as the threat of the drop loomed large.
Nice needed three points to climb the table. Instead, they struggled to break down their opponents. Metz actually looked the more dangerous side during the opening forty-five minutes. Keeper Yehvann Diouf produced several vital stops to prevent the visitors from taking the lead.
The situation grew worse for the home side at the interval. Scores elsewhere showed AJ Auxerre and Le Havre AC leading their matches. This meant even a win might not save Nice from the play-off spot. The crowd showed their anger with loud boos as the teams headed to the dressing rooms. The main ultra group moved from their usual seats to positions closer to the touchline, signalling their frustration.
The second period brought little improvement. Substitute Mohamed-Ali Cho came closest to scoring, but clear chances remained rare. When the referee ended the match, confirmation arrived that both Auxerre and Le Havre had secured their safety. Nice were stuck in sixteenth place.
Frustrated fans stormed onto the pitch in ugly scenes. Security struggled to manage the crowd as players rushed towards the tunnel. Dante may now need to play at least two more matches if he hopes to finish his career with the club still in the top division.
Diouf was the only player to earn credit for his performance. His first-half saves gave his teammates a platform to win the game. However, the outfield players failed to take their opportunities. Several changes at half-time could not spark a comeback as Metz defended stubbornly for a valuable point.
