Italian football icon Gianluigi Buffon has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting he could return to Parma in an off-pitch capacity. The World Cup winner says he would welcome a directorial position at the club where he began his professional journey, but only if the project truly moves him emotionally.
Speaking to Gazzetta di Parma, the former Juventus stalwart explained that standard job offers do not interest him. “I need to feel something special inside,” Buffon stated. “I am not the right person for normal relationships or routine contracts. You must know how to reach my heart. When you manage that, you receive everything I have to give.”
The 46-year-old started his career with the Crociati in 1995 before his legendary spell in Turin. He returned for a farewell season in 2021 before hanging up his gloves. Now, a potential third spell looms, this time in the boardroom rather than the penalty area.
Buffon also praised the club’s current goalkeeping department. He highlighted the achievements of Zion Suzuki, Leandro Corvi and Francesco Rinaldi, who all collected MVP awards during the campaign. “The youth sector at Parma produces real talent,” he said. “Corvi showed solidity during a difficult period. Rinaldi was a wonderful surprise. Long live the Parma goalkeepers.”
Regarding head coach Carlos Cuesta, Buffon offered backing but remained realistic. “Based on results, continuing with him makes sense,” he noted. “However, everything depends on next season’s targets and whether the directors believe the coach matches the club’s future ambitions.”
Despite the warm words, Buffon confirmed no official discussions have taken place yet. The door remains open for an emotional homecoming that would see one of football’s greatest servants return to where it all began.
