- Six simultaneous evening fixtures will decide the final two Champions League spots and the last relegation place
The Italian football season concludes this weekend with crucial battles across the country. Several clubs still face uncertainty regarding European qualification and survival in the top division.
Napoli hosted Udinese in a match that marked the end of Antonio Conte’s time as manager. The home side took an early lead when striker Rasmus Højlund converted a perfectly weighted pass from Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian playmaker had recently recovered from a head wound requiring six stitches, and he entered the match as a substitute.
The victory came at a heavy cost for Napoli. Winger Alisson Santos departed the field in tears after pulling his hamstring whilst running at full speed. The Brazilian received a warm standing ovation from supporters, but the injury appears serious enough to affect his pre-season preparations. Midfielder Stanislav Lobotka also suffered a calf strain during the match, forcing manager Conte to bring on Scottish international Billy Gilmour as a replacement.
During the second period, Napoli requested a penalty after Højlund fell inside the box following contact with defender Christian Kabasele. The match officials rejected the appeal and allowed play to continue. Later, centre-back Amir Rrahmani required medical attention after colliding with goalkeeper Maduka Okoye during a corner kick.
Five other matches kicked off at 8:45 PM local time across Italy. Torino faced city rivals Juventus, whilst AC Milan hosted Cagliari. Hellas Verona welcomed AS Roma, Cremonese played against Como, and Lecce met Genoa. These fixtures will determine which two teams secure entry to next season’s Champions League, and which single club drops down to Serie B.
