Barcelona are struggling to find an exit route for Marc-André ter Stegen after Girona’s drop to the second tier blocked a potential loan return.

The Catalan club must reduce their wage bill to meet La Liga’s strict 1:1 financial regulations this summer. Manager Hansi Flick has made it clear that the German shot-stopper does not feature in his plans for next season.

Ter Stegen joined Girona on loan in January but managed just two appearances before suffering a hamstring injury that required surgery. Despite this setback, Barcelona hoped he could return to the Catalan neighbours for another campaign.

Those hopes ended when Girona drew with Elche and confirmed their relegation from the top flight. The club can no longer offer top-tier football, making a return impossible.

Barcelona now face a race against time to find a new club for the 33-year-old. Keeping him would create serious financial strain at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Meanwhile, Ansu Fati’s situation appears clearer. AS Monaco want to sign the winger permanently, though negotiations over personal terms continue.
