Nice played host to the Champion’s Cup Rekupo as nearly 400 budding footballers took to the pitch at the Allianz Riviera. The 16th edition of this youth tournament brought together 34 teams from across France, offering a platform for the next generation to display their talent.

Former France midfielder Olivier Dacourt attended the event and described it as a remarkable opportunity for young players. The competition features three age groups: Under-9, Under-11, and Under-13 Girls. Among the participants were three professional academy sides: OGC Nice, Olympique de Marseille, and Montpellier HSC.

Jean-Christophe Marquet, who established the tournament, explained that the primary goal centres on enjoyment rather than just spotting future stars. Entry remains free, ensuring no financial barriers prevent participation. Marquet wants amateur footballers to experience exceptional conditions while having fun.

Dacourt echoed this sentiment, reminding everyone that football must remain a game first. He urged both children and their parents to remember the importance of enjoyment over pressure. The former RC Strasbourg Alsace, RC Lens, Fulham, Everton and Inter Milan star noted that modern football risks losing sight of this fundamental aspect.

The competition serves as a testing ground where young talents measure themselves against peers from different regions. Dacourt explained that many youngsters dominate their local teams but need to face stronger opposition to understand their true level. This reality check proves valuable for their development.

The tournament has already launched several professional careers. Wesley Fofana, now a Chelsea defender and France international, previously competed in this event. Other notable graduates include Mohamed Simakan and Axel Tape. These success stories demonstrate the competition’s ability to identify top potential.

Dacourt shared personal memories of his own youth tournaments, recalling how the presence of active professional Franck Sylvestre inspired him to win. Such encounters with established stars motivate young participants to excel.

This year’s results saw Olympique de Marseille claim victory in the U11 section, defeating Montpellier. Burel FC secured the U9 title by overcoming AS Portet-sur-Garonne, whilst FC Vendenheim triumphed in the U13 Women’s category against JE Toulousaine.

Following its established reputation in France, the Champion’s Cup Rekupo now eyes European expansion. Organisers hope to replicate the format in other countries, continuing their mission to provide free, high-quality competitive opportunities for young footballers.
