VfL Wolfsburg have strongly criticised fans who sent hateful messages to Joakim Mæhle on the internet. The Danish defender was sent off in the 14th minute during the 2-1 loss to SC Paderborn in the relegation play-off.
The club shared a statement on social media on Tuesday. They said they understand that supporters feel sad and angry. However, they warned that personal attacks and threats against Mæhle are completely wrong.
Wolfsburg explained that relegation is the club’s fault as a team. They said the season was disappointing for many months. The failure belongs to everyone, not just one player. The club praised Mæhle for giving his best effort this year.
The message also spoke about the player’s feelings after the match. It said Mæhle looked very upset in the stadium tunnels. The club accepts that players sometimes make errors. However, threats and hate speech are never acceptable.
The German side confirmed they fully support Mæhle and his family. They asked for an end to all violent and hateful comments.
