FC Barcelona are accelerating their summer recruitment drive by targeting Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon. The Spanish giants have officially tabled a €70 million bid for the versatile attacker following his impressive displays against them in the Champions League earlier this year.
The 25-year-old England international has already agreed provisional contract terms with the Catalan outfit. This development puts Barcelona in a strong position to secure his signature, despite ongoing interest from Bayern Munich.
Newcastle had initially valued their star forward at €92 million during negotiations with the German club. However, Barcelona’s opening offer falls approximately €22 million short of that valuation. The Magpies may face pressure to sell after losing Alexander Isak last summer and with Yoane Wissa currently sidelined through injury.
Gordon enjoyed a productive campaign, netting 17 goals and providing five assists across 46 appearances. He operated primarily as a centre-forward this season, though he naturally favours the left wing position.
Manager Hansi Flick views the former Everton youngster as ideal cover for Raphinha or potentially as a successor to veteran striker Robert Lewandowski. The Polish goalscorer is expected to depart the Camp Nou when his contract expires this summer.
Barcelona hope to complete the deal swiftly to avoid competition from English top-flight sides who might also enter the race for the dynamic forward.
