- Player contract runs until 2030, strengthening Newcastle’s negotiating position
FC Barcelona have opened formal talks with Newcastle United regarding the potential transfer of England winger Anthony Gordon. The Spanish champions are actively pursuing the 25-year-old attacker as they look to strengthen their squad for the next campaign.
The Catalan giants face stiff competition from German powerhouse Bayern Munich. Representatives from the Bundesliga club have already held official meetings with Newcastle officials. However, sources indicate a considerable gap exists between the two parties over the player’s market value.
Barcelona have operated under strict financial restrictions in recent years. Despite these limitations, the club currently possess the ability to spend money generated through the sale of existing players. This financial flexibility could prove essential in securing Gordon’s signature.
Newcastle maintain a firm stance regarding their star asset. Chief executive David Hopkinson previously insisted that any departures would only happen on the club’s terms. The North East side are reportedly seeking at least £70 million for their top scorer, who remains under contract until 2030.
The club must sell players to fund squad rebuilding efforts following a disappointing league campaign. Nevertheless, they occupy a powerful position in negotiations due to Gordon’s long-term commitment.
Recent team selections suggest an exit is imminent. Manager Eddie Howe dropped Gordon to the substitutes’ bench for the final four matches of the season. This tactical decision fuelled speculation that the forward has already played his final game at St James’ Park. Away supporters sang Gordon’s name during the closing minutes of the defeat at Fulham in what appeared to be an emotional farewell.
Howe refused to confirm whether the player would remain at the club. He admitted he could not predict future events and wished Gordon well ahead of international duty.
Barcelona are simultaneously monitoring alternative targets. The La Liga side hold interest in Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Chelsea striker Joao Pedro. Additionally, manager Hansi Flick retains the option to sign Marcus Rashford on a permanent basis for £26 million following the England forward’s loan spell from Manchester United.
