Paris Saint-Germain lifted the Champions League trophy following a tense final against Arsenal. However, the party in the French capital quickly turned hostile.
Police detained over 400 supporters during the night. Officers fired tear gas to break up large groups in central Paris.
Thousands of security staff were on duty across the city. They attempted to prevent hooligans from attacking buses, trains and shops.
Supporters lit fireworks and flares in the streets. Some individuals burned electric bikes and broke windows of businesses near the famous Champs-Élysées.
Seven police officers were hurt during the clashes. Six vehicles, two shops and one bus shelter also suffered damage.
This disorder has happened before. Last year, similar celebrations turned fatal when PSG won the same competition.
This time, the government promised stronger safety measures. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated they had a solid system ready.
Nuñez described the riots as “absolutely unacceptable”. He confirmed that 280 arrests occurred in Paris alone, with the rest across France.
Politician Marine Le Pen attacked the events online. She claimed that only in France does a football victory create such chaos.
Despite the trouble, PSG players will still celebrate on Sunday. They plan to visit the Champ-de-Mars near the Eiffel Tower. President Emmanuel Macron will also welcome the squad to the presidential palace.
