Thomas Tuchel has given his first press briefing since guiding the England squad to American shores for the upcoming World Cup finals. The national team boss tackled several pressing matters during his media session in the United States.
The Three Lions face their opening World Cup clash against Croatia on 17 June. Before that fixture, they meet New Zealand in a warm-up match this Saturday in Tampa Bay.
Tuchel revealed that his players may complete club transfers during the tournament. However, they must follow strict guidelines. The German coach will not permit any transfer business on matchdays or the day before games. He prefers deals to happen quietly and efficiently without disturbing squad focus.
“Common sense applies,” Tuchel explained. “We cannot stop telephone calls from agents and clubs. But players must remain focused on England duty. If they handle moves privately without creating distraction, we will assist with medical examinations and paperwork.”
Several squad members currently face intense transfer speculation. Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson, and Marcus Rashford all seek new employers, while veteran defender John Stones remains without a club.
Regarding the playing surface in Tampa Bay, Tuchel admitted to concerns. Journalists showed him photographs of the pitch during the press conference. The manager stated he may alter training plans if the turf proves unsuitable. However, his team selection will not change. He intends to field two separate sides for 45 minutes each against New Zealand to manage player workloads.
Captain Harry Kane’s fitness dominated questions from reporters. Critics had noted the striker looked exhausted during the Euro 2024 campaign. Tuchel dismissed these worries completely.
“Harry leads our attack,” the manager stated. “He sets the standard in training sessions. His work rate at Bayern Munich proves he can handle intense physical pressure. The heat and humidity will not trouble him.”
Tuchel outlined specific roles for his other forwards. Ollie Watkins will replace Kane if the captain requires rest during matches. Ivan Toney offers a different tactical option as a second striker.
