Thomas Tuchel expressed frustration with England’s unstructured approach during the first half of their World Cup warm-up match, despite watching his side claim a hard-fought 1-0 victory over New Zealand in extreme heat.

The contest took place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, where temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius. Harry Kane found the net just before the interval, converting a delivery from Djed Spence to register his 79th strike for the Three Lions.

The England manager utilised two entirely different line-ups for each half as he rotated his squad ahead of the tournament. He admitted satisfaction with the second-period showing but remained critical of the opening 45 minutes.

“I accept the result, but I am not completely satisfied,” Tuchel stated following the match. “The second half pleased me more than the first. We showed greater aggression and purpose after the break. We maintained better positions on the pitch, which allowed us to increase our tempo.”

He added: “During the first period, players drifted from their assigned roles. There was excessive improvisation, which reduced our speed and complicated our counter-pressing efforts.”

New Zealand enter the tournament as the lowest-ranked nation, yet their English manager Darren Bazeley believes the Three Lions require significant improvement to lift the trophy.

“Most teams treat their first warm-up match as a fitness exercise,” Bazeley explained. “England performed adequately today, but they will need to raise their standards considerably if they hope to win the competition.”

The extreme heat and poor pitch conditions presented additional challenges. Tuchel described the playing surface as “very uneven” and difficult for maintaining possession, though he welcomed the opportunity to test his players in tough circumstances.

“The temperature made conditions extremely demanding,” he noted. “We have trained together only four times and used experimental combinations today. Given these factors, the disjointed nature of the performance was understandable.”

Several individuals caught the eye during the match. Djed Spence impressed with his attacking contributions, while Marcus Rashford displayed sharpness. Jude Bellingham also stood out following his introduction at the interval.

Kane’s landmark goal draws him level with Brazil’s Neymar on the international scoring charts. The captain reportedly told journalists he feels fitter than ever before.

Arsenal’s Champions League representatives have now joined the camp in the United States, giving Tuchel a full complement of players for Wednesday’s final friendly against Costa Rica. He will expect a more convincing display than this narrow success.
