Lille OSC have completed the signing of defender Tanguy Nianzou from Sevilla, with the 24-year-old signing a two-year deal that includes an option for an additional 12 months. The French club moved swiftly to secure the former France youth international as they look to fill gaps left by recent defensive departures.

The centre-back returns to Ligue 1 seven years after making his senior debut with Paris Saint-Germain. Since then, he has had spells with Bayern Munich and Sevilla, but persistent fitness issues have severely limited his playing time. Across his entire career with those three clubs, Nianzou has managed only 103 appearances, a modest return for a player once considered among Europe’s most promising defensive talents.

Defensive rebuilding

Les Dogues required fresh faces at centre-back following the exits of Aissa Mandi and Chancel Mbemba. Mandi was a near ever-present figure last season, meaning his departure left a significant void in the backline. The club acted quickly to bring in reinforcements before the new campaign begins, identifying Nianzou as a solution despite his chequered medical history.

Nianzou will hope to establish himself as a regular starter under Bruno Génésio. The defender can play across the backline, offering versatility as Lille compete domestically. His ability to play out from the back fits the profile of modern centre-backs sought by top French clubs.

Sevilla spell and fitness battles

Nianzou joined Sevilla in 2022 for a reported €16 million, making 62 appearances across four seasons in Spain. This represents the bulk of his senior career to date, though his time at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán was disrupted by recurring physical setbacks that prevented him from becoming a guaranteed starter.

Before his move to Spain, the Paris-born player struggled for minutes at Bayern Munich following his free transfer from PSG in 2020. The inability to string together consistent appearances has stalled the development of a defender who possesses strong technical ability and physical presence.

The hope remains that returning to French football will provide the stability needed to overcome his injury troubles. Lille will be counting on the 24-year-old to finally realise his potential and anchor their defence during the upcoming season, offering him what his previous clubs could not: a settled run of games in familiar surroundings.
