Manchester United have opened formal negotiations with Roma for France midfielder Manu Koné, with the Serie A club demanding €60m for the World Cup standout, according to L’Equipe.
The French publication reports that United have moved ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign the 23-year-old. This marks a progression from earlier stages of the pursuit, when Italian reports indicated that only the player’s entourage had been contacted. United have now advanced to direct discussions with the Italian club.
Premier League competition
Arsenal remain interested in Koné, but United currently lead the chase. L’Equipe notes that two additional Premier League sides have registered interest, with Liverpool identified as one of the parties monitoring the situation. Despite this competition, sources suggest Old Trafford officials hold the upper hand in negotiations.
World Cup impact on valuation
Koné’s market value has risen sharply following his performances at the 2026 World Cup. The midfielder impressed sufficiently to displace Aurelien Tchaouameni from France’s starting lineup, though his absence was notably felt during the semi-final defeat to Spain.
Roma had previously valued the midfielder at approximately €50m, but his tournament displays have prompted the club to increase their asking price to €60m. Although the Giallorossi qualified for the Champions League, they remain under financial pressure and require player sales to raise funds.
