Roma’s pursuit of Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville has ended after Al-Hilal secured his signature for €80 million, forcing the Giallorossi to explore alternative options to complete coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s attacking trident.
The Serie A side had already missed out on Mason Greenwood, who joined Fenerbahce earlier in the window. Their hopes of landing Summerville from West Ham United for a reported €50m were dashed when the Saudi Pro League side intervened with a superior financial package, reportedly tripling the salary on offer to convince the 24-year-old to move to the Middle East.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Alejandro Garnacho can also be ruled out, with the forward reportedly on the verge of moving to Aston Villa from Chelsea on loan with an obligation to buy.
Fresh targets identified
Roma have now turned their attention to a trio of younger prospects, led by RB Leipzig’s Antonio Nusa. The 21-year-old Norway international is valued at approximately €45m, but the Giallorossi face stiff competition from Arsenal, Newcastle United, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and domestic rivals Napoli.
Diego Moreira represents a more attainable option. The Belgium international, who featured at the World Cup and turns 22 next month, joined RC Strasbourg from Chelsea in 2024. He contributed five goals and nine assists in 42 competitive appearances last season. Chelsea retain a first refusal clause on the winger. Roma reportedly submitted a €30m bid that was rejected, with Strasbourg holding out for closer to €50m.
The third name under consideration is Andreas Schjelderup of Benfica. The Norway international, who recently turned 22, was signed from Nordsjaelland in 2023 and has a contract running until June 2028. However, Benfica are demanding around €80m for his release, a figure that would appear prohibitive for Roma. Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have also registered interest in the player, who competes with Nusa for a starting role in the national side.
What happens next
With the transfer window progressing, Roma must move quickly to secure reinforcements. Moreira appears the most realistic target given the comparatively modest valuation and existing relationship with the player, though negotiations with Strasbourg remain delicate. Securing Nusa would require outmanoeuvring several elite European clubs, while Schjelderup’s asking price likely places him beyond reach unless Benfica lower their demands significantly.
