Chelsea have secured the signature of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a club-record fee of £117 million. The 23-year-old forward has committed to a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, becoming the fourth arrival under new manager Xabi Alonso this summer.
The west London club moved decisively to complete the transfer after agreeing terms on Saturday, beating rivals Arsenal who had been in advanced negotiations to sign the versatile attacker. It is understood that the opportunity to work with Alonso proved decisive in Rogers choosing Chelsea over the Emirates Stadium.
Rogers expressed his enthusiasm upon completing the move, telling the club’s official website: “I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid. I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading.”
The forward arrives fresh from international duty with England at the World Cup, where he featured in the semi-final defeat to Argentina and the subsequent 6-4 victory over France that secured third place. His ability to operate across multiple attacking positions addresses a key requirement for Alonso as he reshapes the squad.
Rapid rise from Middlesbrough
Rogers joined Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024 and enjoyed a meteoric ascent under Unai Emery, scoring 31 goals in 125 appearances to help the club achieve a top-four Premier League finish and secure Europa League qualification. His departure represents a significant loss for Villa but a major statement of intent from Chelsea’s ownership.
Co-owner Behdad Eghbali had signalled earlier this year that the club would target players capable of mounting a genuine title challenge following a disappointing campaign that saw them finish tenth and exit the Champions League at the last-16 stage. The appointment of Alonso, a two-time Champions League winner as a player with Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, was designed partly to attract elite talent.
Summer rebuilding continues
Rogers follows defenders Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha and winger Geovany Quenda through the door at Stamford Bridge. However, Alonso’s squad overhaul has not been entirely successful, with the club failing in a June attempt to sign Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka after refusing to meet the Championship side’s valuation.
The Rogers deal eclipses the previous club-record fee paid for Cole Palmer, who arrived from Manchester City in 2023. Chelsea will hope the England forward can make an immediate impact as they look to improve on last season’s tenth-place finish.
