Chrislain Matsima has reached an agreement to join Crystal Palace from FC Augsburg as the UEFA Conference League winners accelerate their search for defensive reinforcements.
The 24-year-old French centre-back has settled personal terms with the South London side, according to reports, with negotiations between the two clubs now at an advanced stage. Palace are positioning Matsima as a direct replacement for Maxence Lacroix, who is expected to complete a move to Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth more than €60 million.
Monaco ties and Bundesliga impact
Matsima developed through the prestigious AS Monaco academy and retains strong ties to the Principality club, which holds a 15 per cent sell-on clause entitling them to a portion of any profit from his transfer to Selhurst Park. He made the switch to Germany from Monaco in the summer of 2024, signing a contract that runs until 2030.
Despite arriving in the Bundesliga only last year, Matsima quickly established himself as a key figure in the Augsburg defence. He made 20 appearances across all competitions during the recent campaign, starting 19 of those matches, and played a significant role as the club enjoyed one of its strongest league finishes. His opportunities increased following injuries and suspensions to teammates Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Keven Schlotterbeck.
His season was disrupted by a serious tendon injury sustained in January, which sidelined him for several months, but he returned to feature during the closing weeks of the campaign.
Fee structure and next steps
Augsburg are expected to demand a substantial fee for the defender’s departure. Reports suggest the German club anticipate a transfer sum that could rival the €26 million club-record they received for Abdul Rahman Baba’s move to Chelsea approximately a decade ago.
While Matsima has agreed terms with Palace, the transfer remains subject to the completion of negotiations between the clubs and a successful medical examination. Manager Pierre Sage is keen to secure the deal swiftly to integrate the former France youth international into his squad before the new season begins.
