1. FC Köln have reached a full agreement to sign 18-year-old goalkeeper Martin James. The Frenchman is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Friday before completing his move to the Bundesliga side, where he will serve as the third-choice option behind the club’s established senior pair.
James arrives as a free agent after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired this summer. He initially joined the French champions’ youth ranks in 2022 and progressed sufficiently to earn a place in the senior squad during the league phase of their victorious Champions League campaign. However, the young shot-stopper missed the final in Budapest after sustaining a knee injury.
Experienced competition ahead
The teenager will face stiff competition for playing time from Marvin Schwäbe and Ron-Robert Zieler. Schwäbe retains the captain’s armband under manager Rene Wagner and remains firmly established as the club’s first choice between the posts. Zieler, a World Cup winner with Germany, continues in his role as understudy to the skipper, providing a wealth of international experience within the goalkeeping department.
Köln have also reinforced their goalkeeping coaching structure ahead of the new season. The club confirmed on Thursday that 33-year-old Nils Segelken has joined the backroom staff to work alongside Peter Greiber, who recently committed his future to the club by signing a long-term contract extension. This enhanced coaching setup will be responsible for integrating James into the professional environment.

The acquisition of James represents a strategic move to secure a promising young talent for the future while addressing immediate squad depth requirements. Having trained within one of Europe’s most prestigious academies, the teenager will look to continue his development within Köln’s first-team setup, learning from two seasoned professionals who have operated at the highest levels of German and international football.
