Lucas Digne is scheduled to undergo a medical with Paris Saint-Germain this week as he prepares to rejoin the French champions more than ten years after his initial spell at the club. The 33-year-old Aston Villa left-back is expected to sign a three-year contract with the reigning UEFA Champions League holders, with PSG having triggered his €10m release clause.
According to L’Equipe, the France international will provide experienced cover for Portugal left-back Nuno Mendes. The move also marks a reunion with manager Luis Enrique, under whom Digne played during the 2016-2017 campaign at Barcelona.
Europa League departure
Digne leaves Villa Park having joined the Birmingham-based club from Everton in January 2022. He departs as a Europa League winner, capping his two-and-a-half season stint in the Premier League with European silverware.
The defender previously spent time with PSG earlier in his career before moving to Spain and subsequently England. His return to Parc des Princes offers him the opportunity to add to his domestic honours while competing at the highest level in European competition.
Squad depth
The €10m release clause allowed for a straightforward negotiation process. Digne’s acquisition addresses PSG’s need for reliable depth in the full-back positions as they balance domestic Ligue 1 duties with Champions League defence.
The transfer represents another significant squad change for Aston Villa, who must now identify a replacement for the experienced left-back ahead of the new campaign. For Digne, the move completes a full circle in his club career, returning to Paris after successful spells in La Liga and the Premier League.
