Defensive injuries prompt Napoli rethink
Napoli are reportedly considering bringing veteran defender Juan Jesus back to the club as they battle a defensive injury crisis ahead of the new Serie A season. The Brazilian centre-back became a free agent on 30 June when his contract expired, but the Partenopei could offer him a surprise return to solve immediate squad shortages.
New coach Max Allegri faces a depleted backline following a damaging pre-season injury to key signing Alessandro Buongiorno. The Italy international requires surgery to reconstruct the root of his meniscus ligament and faces two to three months on the sidelines. Fellow defender Sam Beukema is also unavailable after failing to recover fully from fitness issues that ended his previous campaign prematurely.
Veteran faces multiple options
At 35, Juan Jesus offers extensive Serie A experience having spent over a decade in Italy with Inter, Roma and most recently Napoli, where he played from 2021 until his release this summer. According to Il Mattino and Tuttomercatoweb, the Brazilian is evaluating several proposals as he decides on his next move.
Alongside the potential Naples reunion, Juan Jesus has attracted interest from newly-promoted Venezia, Spanish second-tier side Deportivo La Coruña, and Brazilian giants Atletico Mineiro. The defender has yet to commit to any destination, leaving Napoli in competition for his signature despite their urgent need for cover.
Squad limits block immediate move
Any return to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium faces a significant bureaucratic hurdle. Napoli currently operate at their maximum squad allowance for over-22 players and must first sell a senior player to register another. This restriction complicates their ability to act quickly on their interest in the veteran.
The situation leaves Napoli monitoring the market while attempting to resolve their squad numbers. With the transfer window remaining open and defensive options limited, the club must decide whether to pursue the necessary sale to facilitate Juan Jesus’s return or risk entering the season with inadequate cover at centre-back.
