The National Women’s Soccer League will kick off its 2027 campaign on February 11, marking the earliest start date in the competition’s history. The fixture list has been designed to accommodate the Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with the league set to observe a month-long hiatus while the tournament takes place.
The season will begin with the annual Challenge Cup match on February 6, before the regular programme commences five days later. Commissioner Jessica Berman confirmed the schedule during a midseason address, noting that the competition will pause from June 24 to July 25 to allow players to represent their national teams.
Postseason Dates
Following the World Cup break, the regular season will continue before the playoffs begin on November 5. The NWSL championship match is scheduled for November 20, capping a campaign that extends deeper into the winter months than previous editions.
Strategic Positioning
The February launch intentionally coincides with Super Bowl weekend, leveraging the NWSL’s broadcast partnership with ESPN and ABC. “We know that major tournaments inspire millions of people to follow the sport, and our schedule allows us to be part of the lead-in and the lead-out of that big moment,” Berman stated. She added that the league is “working closely with ESPN to make sure that the NWSL is woven into the weekend stories, and we’re very excited about that.”
MLS Calendar Split
The NWSL’s spring-to-fall calendar will diverge sharply from Major League Soccer’s shift to a summer-to-spring schedule. Berman explained that while shared stadiums present logistical challenges, the differing timelines will ultimately ease booking conflicts. “Right now, being on a spring to fall footprint with MLS, we both have our playoffs at the same time, and what that means is that there are holds across lots of dates with uncertainty,” she said. “With us being on different calendars, that’s no longer going to be the case. We’re going to have visibility into weeks that might otherwise have been reserved but not confirmed, and that will be helpful.”
Despite speculation about aligning with international counterparts, the NWSL will maintain its current seasonal structure through at least 2030.
Current Momentum
The scheduling announcement comes as the league experiences increased engagement following the men’s World Cup this summer. Average attendance stands at 11,174 per match, narrowly trailing the 2024 record of 11,249. “We’re close to beating that, and we hope we’ll have a strong second half of the season, where we can celebrate this being our highest-attended year on an average basis,” Berman noted.
