Frosinone Calcio have completed a double signing of Austrian internationals Romano Schmid and Florian Grillitsch as the newly-promoted Serie A club strengthen their midfield ahead of the new campaign.

Schmid departs Bremen for Italy

Schmid, 26, arrives from Werder Bremen for a base transfer fee of €8.5 million. The attacking midfielder departs Germany after six years, during which he made 192 competitive appearances for the club and developed into a regular for his national side.

The Austrian international has featured at both the European Championship and the World Cup, bringing valuable tournament experience to the Italian top flight. With his contract at Bremen set to expire next summer, the German club opted to sell now rather than risk losing him for nothing when the deal runs down. Schmid has taken the number 10 shirt at his new club.

Bremen’s managing director for sport, Clemens Fritz, paid tribute to the departing player. “Romano is leaving us having become one of the key figures in our team over the past few years,” he said. “He developed into an established Bundesliga player and Austria international in Bremen and formed a real connection with the club, the city and the fans.”

Schmid reflected warmly on his time in Germany, highlighting the personal and professional growth he experienced during spells that included both relegation and promotion. “So much has happened over all these years. Relegation, promotion. I’ve grown into someone who represents his national side, I’ve played at the European Championship and the World Cup. My first son was born here in Bremen. I’ll always look back on my time in Bremen as one of the most important periods in my life,” he said.

Grillitsch arrives on free transfer

Grillitsch, 31, joins on a free transfer after leaving Portuguese side Braga upon the expiration of his contract. The experienced defensive midfielder previously played for Bremen and enjoyed two separate spells at TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, giving him a strong understanding of top-level European football.

The capture of two seasoned Austria internationals represents a significant statement of intent from Frosinone as they prepare for life back in Serie A. The club earned promotion to the Italian top flight and are working to assemble a squad capable of competing against established opposition. Schmid offers creativity and attacking thrust from midfield, while Grillitsch provides defensive stability and leadership qualities gathered across multiple leagues.
