Werder Bremen are actively working to secure Romano Schmid’s long-term future after club official Peter Niemeyer confirmed that contract extension talks are underway. The Austria international has entered the final season of his current agreement, placing the Bundesliga club under pressure to secure improved terms and prevent losing the midfielder as a free agent next summer.
Niemeyer, Werder Bremen’s Head of first team football, provided the update to BILD. “Of course, it is our ambition not to let a player like Romano (Schmid) go as a free agent,” he stated. “We are in constant exchange. The discussions about a possible extension will become concrete shortly. We can very well imagine continuing with him.”
The 26-year-old attacking midfielder arrived at Werder Bremen in 2019 and has since developed into a key component of the first team. Although he has previously been considered a candidate for departure during past transfer windows, sources indicate there are currently no signs of an imminent summer move. According to Transfermarkt data, Schmid presently holds a market value of €15 million.
Schmid recently demonstrated his international quality by scoring Austria’s opening goal in a 3-1 World Cup victory over Jordan. His creative output from midfield has made him a valuable asset, and the club recognise that sourcing a high-quality replacement would present a significant challenge should negotiations falter.
With Schmid’s contract running down, Werder Bremen have indicated their willingness to offer improved financial terms to reflect his status within the squad. The club expects discussions to become concrete in the near future as they seek to finalise an arrangement that keeps the Austrian at the Weser-Stadion for the foreseeable future.
