Dynamo Dresden have recorded their first victory of the 2. Bundesliga campaign, overcoming promotion candidates SV Darmstadt 98 courtesy of an early strike and a numerical advantage in the closing stages.

Jonas Sterner scored his side’s first goal of the season within the opening fifteen minutes, capitalising on a swift one-two with Vincent Vermeij to put the hosts ahead. The right-back, who joined Thomas Stamm’s squad permanently this summer following a loan spell from Hannover 96, ensured Dresden made a sharp start in front of their home supporters.

The result marks a swift recovery for Dresden after they suffered defeat on the opening matchday against Nürnberg. By contrast, Darmstadt have collected only one point from their first two fixtures, a worrying return for a side expected to challenge for promotion this term.

Red card proves costly

Darmstadt’s hopes of finding an equaliser suffered a significant blow twenty minutes from time when Kai Klefisch received a second booking and his marching orders. The dismissal prompted protests from captain Marcel Schuhen, who was cautioned for his complaints, and disrupted manager Florian Kohfeldt’s plans to introduce fresh legs.

Despite the setback, the visitors did see new faces enter the fray. Stoke City loanee Milan Smit and Yannik Luhrs both made their debuts as late substitutes, while Lars Kehl had earlier appeared for the first time after replacing Yosuke Furukawa at half-time.

Schuhen was kept busy throughout the second period as Dresden pressed for a second goal, though the single strike proved sufficient to separate the sides. Darmstadt, who were among the division’s highest scorers last season, struggled to create clear openings against organised opposition.

Promotion push stalls

The defeat leaves Darmstadt with ground to make up already, with tougher assignments on the horizon. Kohfeldt’s side are scheduled to face Hannover 96 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern in their next fixtures, games that will carry added significance if they are to keep pace with the leading pack.

For Dresden, the victory offers early vindication of Stamm’s summer recruitment. Sterner’s permanent arrival from Hannover has already yielded dividends, while the integration of new players suggests depth is being built following their return to the second tier.
