Werder Bremen have rejected two separate offers from French side Strasbourg for centre-back Karim Coulibaly, yet negotiations between the clubs are continuing with a view to reaching an agreement.

Despite the German club dismissing the bids, talks remain active. Reports indicate that a third offer is expected to be tabled in the coming hours as Strasbourg attempt to secure the defender.

Rapid rise since Bremen switch

Coulibaly has emerged as one of German football’s most promising defensive talents since joining Werder Bremen from the Hamburg SV academy in the summer of 2024. The 1.91-metre centre-back made an immediate impact during his debut campaign, starting 24 of his 27 Bundesliga appearances and establishing himself as a mainstay in the starting eleven.

The Oldenburg-born player etched his name into club history on 30 August, becoming Werder Bremen’s youngest ever goalscorer at 18 years, three months and seven days when he found the net against Bayer Leverkusen. His performances have also earned recognition at international level, with Coulibaly representing Germany at both Under-17 and Under-21 level.

Strasbourg persistence tested

Strasbourg’s determination to secure the young defender reflects his rapid ascent in German football. However, Werder Bremen’s refusal to sanction a deal at this stage underlines Coulibaly’s importance to their defensive setup following his breakthrough season.

The rejection of multiple bids suggests the Bundesliga outfit view the centre-back as central to their future plans. With his combination of physical presence and top-flight experience already established despite his youth, losing Coulibaly would represent a significant blow to their defensive options.

With negotiations ongoing and a further bid reportedly imminent, the situation appears set to develop rapidly. Werder Bremen must now weigh any improved financial offer against the sporting cost of losing a player who has quickly become integral to their backline.
