Andrea Natali has completed a permanent transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to AZ Alkmaar, with the Dutch side securing the 18-year-old defender on a long-term contract running until the summer of 2031.
The Eredivisie club have paid between €2 million and €3 million to make the centre-back’s stay permanent following a one-year loan spell, both clubs confirmed. The fee represents a significant investment in a player who has yet to make his senior debut at professional level.
Youth development pathway
Natali never appeared for Leverkusen’s first team during his time in Germany. The teenager featured exclusively for the Bundesliga club’s academy sides, registering 29 combined appearances for the Under-17 and Under-19 squads before making the switch to the Netherlands.
The permanent move allows Natali to continue his development away from the intense competition for places at Leverkusen, where breaking into the senior setup has proven difficult for young defenders.

The defender expressed his delight at returning to Alkmaar, citing the positive environment during his temporary stint as a decisive factor in his decision to commit his future to the club.
“I am incredibly happy to be back here and to finally play for AZ Alkmaar,” Natali said. “Last year I received a very warm welcome from the team. So too, the entire coaching staff and all employees, so it’s great to be able to work with everyone again.”
Strategic move
The contract until 2031 represents a substantial commitment from AZ, securing Natali’s services through to his mid-twenties. The agreement suggests the Alkmaar hierarchy view the centre-back as a long-term project rather than an immediate first-team solution.
For Leverkusen, the transfer generates a return on a homegrown talent who progressed through their youth system. AZ have established a reputation for nurturing young defenders and providing a pathway to senior football, an opportunity Natali will now pursue on a permanent basis.
