VfB Stuttgart have secured the long-term services of sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth after the 47-year-old signed a deal keeping him at the Bundesliga club until 2029.

The new agreement, confirmed by the club on Tuesday, extends Wohlgemuth’s previous contract that was due to expire in 2027. The deal includes a salary increase but notably does not contain a release clause, underlining the mutual commitment between both parties as they seek to build on recent progress.

Continuity after rapid ascent

Wohlgemuth has overseen Stuttgart’s football operations since December 2022, guiding the club through a period of remarkable improvement. Last season, the Swabians finished fourth in the Bundesliga and reached the DFB-Pokal final, where they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

The extension ensures stability at the top of the club’s hierarchy, with Wohlgemuth working alongside chief executive Alexander Wehrle, head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, technical director Christian Gentner, and academy head Stephan Hildebrandt.

Ambitious targets

In a statement released by the club, Wohlgemuth emphasised the collective effort behind Stuttgart’s achievements and outlined his determination to maintain their upward trajectory.

“Together, we have put many things on the right track for VfB over the past few years,” he said. “With my colleagues on the board, led by our CEO Alexander Wehrle, with Sebastian Hoeneß and Christian Gentner, in the youth academy with Stephan Hildebrandt, and with our VfB women’s team with Sascha Glass. Our names stand for all VfB employees who, through their daily work, form the backbone of this special club.”

He added: “We have a clear idea of where we want to go, while also knowing that between a good idea and its successful implementation there must always be the necessary consistency, patience and perseverance.”

The supervisory board, led by Dietmar Allgaier, has backed Wohlgemuth to continue shaping the club’s sporting future. His retention provides crucial continuity as Stuttgart aim to establish themselves as consistent contenders in the upper reaches of German football.
