Villa Secure Ruggeri as Digne Replacement
Aston Villa have completed the signing of Italy international left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atlético Madrid. The defender arrives at Villa Park as a direct replacement for Lucas Digne, who has joined Paris Saint-Germain following four seasons with the Premier League club.
Ruggeri moves to England despite having signed a five-year contract with Atlético only last summer. During his brief stay in the Spanish capital, he established himself as a regular starter. He made 26 appearances in LaLiga and featured 15 times in the Champions League as Atlético reached the semi-finals of the competition, where they were eliminated by Arsenal. The Italy international now switches LaLiga for the Premier League after just one year in Spain.
Squad Overhaul for European Campaign
The Italian defender forms part of an extensive recruitment drive as Villa strengthen their squad for Champions League football. The club has also added Johan Manzambi, João Gomes and goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who signed from Parma. Alejandro Garnacho has arrived on an initial loan arrangement.
These incoming transfers coincide with the departure of several established first-team players. Digne has moved to Paris Saint-Germain, while midfielder Youri Tielemans and forward Morgan Rogers have also left the club. Villa now face the task of integrating numerous new faces while maintaining competitive standards across domestic and European competitions.
Goalkeeper Situation Uncertain
Questions remain over the future of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. Juventus reportedly attempted to sign him in recent weeks. He was not involved in the squad for last week’s UEFA Super Cup defeat against Paris Saint-Germain, intensifying speculation about a potential departure. The arrival of Suzuki from Parma provides additional goalkeeping options should Martínez leave.
Fixture Schedule
Villa begin their Premier League season with an away trip to Brighton on Sunday. Ruggeri could make his debut in that match as the club commences its campaign while managing the additional demands of Champions League football.
