Matteo Ruggeri has completed a €25m transfer to Aston Villa from Atletico Madrid, with the Italy international joining the Premier League club for an initial fee plus add-ons. The 24-year-old defender signed just twelve months after leaving Atalanta for the Spanish side in a €17m deal, marking another significant step in his rapid career progression.

The versatile left-back, who also operates as a wing-back, arrives at Villa Park with substantial European experience. He has made 23 Champions League appearances across spells with Atalanta and Atletico Madrid, registering three assists in the competition. His move to the Midlands comes after Unai Emery’s side secured their place in this season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League.

Swift Change of Scenery

The transfer marks a rapid change of scenery for the defender, who only joined Atletico from his boyhood club Atalanta last summer. Villa’s offer, which exceeds the €17m paid by the Spanish club, reflects the player’s rising stock and the Premier League side’s determination to secure European-quality reinforcements.

Ruggeri stated that Aston Villa’s upward trajectory and the manager’s tactical demands convinced him to make the switch. He noted that monitoring the team’s progress last season left him with no hesitation about accepting the transfer, specifically citing the intensity of the football the head coach expects from his players.

Silverware and International Ambitions

The defender outlined his desire to secure silverware with his new employers. He referenced Atletico Madrid’s run to the Champions League semi-finals last term as evidence of his capability to compete at that level, expressing hope that Villa can achieve similar success during his tenure.

Despite multiple call-ups to the senior national team setup, Ruggeri is yet to earn his first full cap for Italy. He came through the renowned Atalanta youth academy and previously named former Milan defender Paolo Maldini as his childhood idol, though he maintains he has not modelled his game on any specific player in recent years.

Immediate Fixture List

The Italian could make his maiden appearance for the club this weekend when Villa host Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League. Fixtures against Arsenal follow shortly after, offering the defender further opportunity to establish himself in Emery’s starting eleven. He expressed anticipation about experiencing the matchday atmosphere at Villa Park after studying footage of the ground and its supporters.
