Lars Gindorf’s 57th-minute penalty proved decisive after the hosts were reduced to ten men early in the contest, though the visitors were made to work for their win by a resilient defensive display.
Vukotic dismissal changes complexion
The match swung in Hannover’s favour after just 20 minutes when Darmstadt defender Aleksandar Vukotic was shown a straight red card. The referee determined that Vukotic deliberately handled inside his own half while acting as the last defender, leaving little option but to dismiss him and reduce the hosts to ten men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Darmstadt fashioned the clearer opportunities before the interval. Noah Weißhaupt twice tested Hannover goalkeeper Leo Weinkauf, forcing fine stops from the shot-stopper. The first chance came following a quick breakaway, while the second opportunity saw Weinkauf deny Milan Smit after Weißhaupt had delivered a threatening cross from the right. At the other end, Marcel Schuhen saved comfortably from Kolja Oudenne following the winger’s driving run down the left flank, ensuring the sides went into the break level.
Gindorf spot-kick settles contest
Hannover eventually made their advantage count 12 minutes into the second period. An effort from Marcel Hartel outside the penalty area struck the arm of Lance Duijvestijn, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Gindorf stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick into the bottom-left corner, beyond Schuhen’s reach, to give the visitors a lead they would not relinquish.
The visitors continued to press as Darmstadt’s numerical disadvantage became increasingly evident. Schuhen produced a superb save to claw away a curling effort from Mustapha Bundu nine minutes from time after Benjamin Källman had broken through and laid the ball back to him. Källman should have sealed the victory in the 88th minute when Bundu returned the favour with a cut-back from the left, but the forward somehow lifted his shot over the crossbar from an unmarked position at the back post.
The miss proved inconsequential as Hannover saw out the remaining minutes with minimal fuss to record their win. The result leaves Darmstadt reflecting on how the early dismissal ultimately shaped a contest in which they had initially looked dangerous going forward.
