A significant transfer saga involving French midfielder Manu Koné, 25, and Chelsea FC reportedly collapsed at the very end of the recent transfer window, despite a verbal agreement between the clubs and the player.
Chelsea and AS Roma had reportedly reached a verbal agreement for a fee of €70 million for Koné. This figure was said to be €25 million more than the initial sum AS Roma had demanded for the player. Koné himself had also agreed to the terms of a move to Stamford Bridge, indicating a strong desire for the transfer to proceed.
Why the Deal Fell Through
The proposed transfer ultimately fell apart due to AS Roma’s inability to secure a suitable replacement for Koné. The Italian club reportedly made attempts to sign Youssouf Fofana, 27, from AC Milan and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, 31, from Olympique de Marseille, but these efforts were unsuccessful.
Adding to the complexity, AS Roma manager Gianpiero Gasperini reportedly refused to let Koné leave the club. This managerial stance, combined with the difficulty in finding a replacement, proved to be the decisive factors in the deal’s collapse.
Chelsea’s Pursuit
Chelsea’s interest in Koné intensified towards the close of the transfer window, especially after facing complexities in a potential deal for AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara, 22. Reports suggest that Xabi Alonso, keen to work with Koné, even consulted his former player Kylian Mbappé, 27, to gather information about his compatriot, highlighting Chelsea’s serious intent to sign the midfielder.
Despite the advanced stage of negotiations and the player’s agreement, Koné remains an AS Roma player, with the club unable to sanction his departure without securing a suitable replacement.
