Real Sociedad have emerged as frontrunners to secure Mamadou Sarr on a temporary deal from Chelsea, though the Spanish side face stiff competition from Saudi Arabia for the 20-year-old defender’s signature.

According to Foot Mercato, the Basque side are keen to bring the centre-back to San Sebastián before the transfer window closes. However, Al-Hilal have also registered interest and have reportedly outlined their project to the player. The prospect of lining up alongside compatriot Kalidou Koulibaly in Riyadh could prove tempting for Sarr.

Struggles since Strasbourg move

Sarr completed his move to west London from Chelsea’s sister club RC Strasbourg Alsace last winter but has found the step up challenging. He has featured just seven times for the Blues since his arrival, having been an undisputed first-team regular in Ligue 1.

The Martigues-born defender was given few opportunities by Xabi Alonso during Chelsea’s pre-season preparations, according to the same report, and now appears set to leave on loan to continue his development.

Despite limited minutes at club level, Sarr remains on the radar of Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, who included him in the World Cup squad, though he did not feature in the tournament.

What happens next?

With game time at Chelsea looking unlikely, a loan departure appears imminent. Real Sociedad view the youngster as defensive reinforcement, while Al-Hilal offer the allure of top-tier wages and a familiar face in Koulibaly.

The coming season represents a critical juncture for Sarr, who needs senior football to maintain his place in the international setup. A decision is expected in the coming days as Chelsea look to trim their squad and secure regular playing time for the promising centre-back.
