Four-Match Ban and €50,000 Fine
Matteo Guendouzi will miss Fenerbahce‘s Champions League trip to face Roma after UEFA handed the French midfielder a four-match European ban for misconduct following his side’s play-off victory over Lyon. European football’s governing body confirmed that two of those games are suspended and subject to a one-year probationary period, while Guendouzi has also been ordered to pay a €50,000 fine.
Tunnel Brawl After Lyon Taunt
The sanctions relate to events immediately after Fenerbahce’s 2-1 away win in the second leg of their Champions League play-off tie, a result that eliminated Lyon from the 2026-27 competition. Guendouzi was found guilty of “insulting and provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct” after taunting the home support with shouts of “Allez l’OM”, a chant referencing his former club Marseille, Lyon’s bitter rivals.
The provocation triggered an angry response from Lyon players and staff, who were already upset by their elimination. The situation descended into a massive brawl in the tunnel as both sets of players and staff made their way off the pitch, with tempers boiling over after the final whistle.
Missed Reunion with Dybala
Guendouzi’s enforced absence also thwarts a reunion with Roma forward Paulo Dybala. The two frequently clashed during Guendouzi’s spell with Lazio in Serie A, regularly finding themselves on opposing sides in Rome derby meetings. After Roma beat Lazio last season, Dybala said: “I still had fun, even though my friend wasn’t there,” referring to Guendouzi.
With two matches of the ban suspended, Guendouzi will serve an immediate two-game suspension provided he avoids further breaches during the one-year probationary period. Fenerbahce must now plan for their upcoming visit to the Stadio Olimpico without the former Lazio midfielder.
