SV Darmstadt 98 have officially announced the signing of Marco Richter, who joins the club on a free transfer from FSV Mainz 05. The versatile winger makes a permanent return to Darmstadt after a successful loan spell last season.
Richter’s Impactful Loan Spell
During his previous stint at Darmstadt, Richter made 32 competitive appearances, proving to be a significant asset for the team. He contributed notably with twelve goal involvements, showcasing his ability to influence matches.
Darmstadt Director’s Delight
Darmstadt sporting director Paul Fernie confirmed the signing, expressing his satisfaction at securing Richter’s services once again. Fernie revealed that the club had maintained contact with Richter since his loan concluded. He explained that discussions intensified ‘following the change in his situation after his contract was terminated in Mainz,’ which paved the way for his return.
Fernie praised Richter’s abilities, stating, ‘His qualities are undisputed, and he proved last season that he can be a key player.’ The director also admitted that he initially believed a permanent deal for Richter would not be feasible, making the official signing a particularly welcome development for the club.
A Bundesliga Veteran
Richter brings a wealth of experience from Germany’s top flight. He played 97 Bundesliga matches for FC Augsburg, where he also progressed through the youth ranks after an earlier period at FC Bayern Munich‘s academy. Additionally, Richter made 79 top-flight appearances for Hertha BSC and FSV Mainz 05 between August 2021 and August 2024, further solidifying his status as an experienced Bundesliga campaigner.
