Inter midfielder Andy Diouf has openly discussed his current position as a right wing-back, stating his long-term ambition to return to central midfield. Despite his preference, Diouf affirmed his commitment to coach Cristian Chivu’s tactical demands, acknowledging the valuable experience gained in his new role.

Adapting to a New Position

Diouf, who joined Inter in the summer of 2025, has found himself deployed in an unfamiliar wide role this season. He has started two out of three Serie A matches and a Champions League fixture as a wing-back, a position he never anticipated playing.

The tactical shift came after Denzel Dumfries departed Inter for Real Madrid in the summer of 2026. While Djed Spence arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in the same transfer window to fill the right wing-back void, Diouf was initially tasked with covering the position. He explained to l’Equipe that the move began after a derby loss against Milan, where the coach experimented with him in a wider role.

Diouf admitted that the wing-back role is physically demanding. He described the constant need to attack when in possession and track back defensively, which requires significant energy and leaves him feeling exhausted after matches.

Midfield Ambition Remains

Despite his willingness to adapt and the learning opportunities presented by his current role, Diouf’s heart remains in central midfield. He views it as his natural position, one he has trained in throughout his career.

The competition for places in Inter’s midfield is intense, featuring established players like Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu, Piotr Zielinski, Petar Sucic, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Even with Davide Frattesi’s departure this summer, the arrival of Curtis Jones and Aleksandar Stankovic has further heightened the challenge for a central spot.

Diouf believes he can perform better in midfield, a position where he feels Inter fans have not yet truly seen his capabilities. However, he reiterated his dedication to the team, stating he will continue to fulfil any role Cristian Chivu assigns him without hesitation, always striving to give his best.
