Lazio have made a surprising start to the Serie A season, with midfielder Davide Frattesi central to their strong performance. The Biancocelesti are currently level on 25 points with Inter after nine Serie A games, a position few anticipated at the beginning of the campaign.
Frattesi has been a standout performer, netting three goals in just five Serie A appearances. Speaking from Italy’s training centre in Coverciano, the midfielder admitted he did not foresee such a positive opening to the season for his new club.
Unexpected Success at the Olimpico
“I didn’t [expect it], also because at the start of the season there wasn’t exactly huge enthusiasm,” Frattesi stated, referencing the team’s Coppa Italia elimination by Serie B side Mantova in mid-August. He highlighted the importance of team cohesion, adding, “I like the fact that we’ve created a good group, and that makes a difference. You bounce back from disappointments more quickly, and you can recharge.”
When pressed on whether Lazio could challenge for the Serie A title, Frattesi playfully deflected, suggesting reporters ask the Inter and Roma players present at the training camp.
Reunion with Gennaro Gattuso
A significant factor in Frattesi’s move to Lazio and the team’s current form is his reunion with former Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso. Gattuso reportedly played a key role in the midfielder’s summer transfer from Inter.
Frattesi expressed his appreciation for Gattuso, saying, “I always felt his trust even when I wasn’t playing much for the national team. When he called me back this summer, I didn’t think twice. I appreciate him as a person before I appreciate him as a coach.”
Despite their close working relationship, there is one topic Frattesi and Gattuso avoid: Italy’s failed attempt to qualify for the World Cup. Frattesi described it as “a wound that’s still bleeding. It will take time.” He added, “We never talk about this; we’ve only talked about Lazio. We know it’s difficult for both him and me. I went to Lazio because I wanted to come back here and because he was here.”
Frattesi’s impactful performances and his strong bond with Gattuso appear to be key ingredients in Lazio’s unexpected rise in the Serie A standings this season.
