Germany national team head coach Jürgen Klopp has confirmed that Nicolò Tresoldi, the highly-rated Club Brugge striker, has not yet made a definitive choice regarding his senior international allegiance. Tresoldi remains eligible to represent both Italy and Germany.
The 22-year-old was born in Cagliari, Italy, to Italian parents. However, he later moved to Germany as a teenager, where he developed his club career with Hannover and represented Germany at both U19 and U21 levels. This dual background has led to a significant decision point in his burgeoning career.
Rising Star’s Dilemma
Tresoldi’s profile has risen considerably over the past year, making his international choice a prominent topic. Last season, he contributed to 32 goals in 58 appearances across all competitions for Club Brugge, a period during which the club performed strongly in the Belgian Pro League. He has continued his impressive form into the 2026-27 campaign, scoring five goals in eight games so far.
His consistent performance extends to the international youth stage, where he boasts an average of a goal every other game for Germany’s U21s, with 12 goals from 24 caps. His scoring rate for Club Brugge in the league is almost identical, with 22 goals in 45 appearances.
While there had been speculation that Tresoldi might be included in Roberto Mancini’s Italy national team squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures in September and October, recent reports suggested the forward preferred to continue with the Germany U21s for the time being before committing to a senior national team.
Klopp’s Stance
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Klopp addressed the situation directly. Tresoldi is not part of the senior Germany squad for the current international break but is widely expected to be named in the Germany U21 side, which is due to be announced on Friday.
Klopp emphasised that Tresoldi’s absence from the senior squad should not be misinterpreted. “The fact that he isn’t on the list doesn’t mean that he’s chosen against Germany or against Italy,” Klopp stated. “It’s not an easy decision for a youngster to make. We don’t want to put any pressure on him, we want to show him the possibilities.”
The decision facing Tresoldi is a significant one, with both footballing nations keen to secure the services of a player demonstrating such promising form at a crucial stage of his development.
