Olympique Lyonnais manager Paulo Fonseca has informed his squad of his impending departure from the club, with the Portuguese coach set to join Sporting CP. Fonseca is expected to travel to Portugal to finalise a contract that could run until 2030.
The announcement to the Lyon dressing room follows an emotional period for Fonseca, who was reportedly in tears after Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Angers SCO. His exit comes despite Lyon’s satisfaction with his work, with the club facilitating the move due to their ongoing financial situation. Reports suggest Lyon may receive a fee of around €5 million for the manager.
Fonseca’s Move to Sporting CP
Fonseca arrived at Lyon in January 2025, and his current contract was due to expire next June. His move to Sporting CP comes shortly after the Portuguese club parted ways with their manager, Rui Borges. Fonseca is understood to be a supporter of Sporting CP, making the move a significant one for him personally.
Interim Leadership and Potential Successor
In the immediate aftermath of Fonseca’s departure, assistant manager Jorge Maciel is expected to take interim charge of Olympique Lyonnais. Maciel will lead the team for their upcoming Europa League match against Real Sociedad next Thursday, and is also anticipated to oversee the league fixture against Stade Brestois on Sunday, before the international break.
Looking ahead, Carlos Vicens has emerged as a leading candidate to succeed Fonseca as Lyon’s permanent manager. Vicens, who has previously managed SC Braga and served as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, is reportedly expected to take the reins at the Groupama Stadium following Maciel’s temporary tenure.
